This presentation shares a curriculum designed for art education students centered upon three individual contemporary artists’ work, Maria Gaspar, Joiri Minaya, and Ana Mendieta. Fusing photography and performance, the images these artists create subvert assumptions and challenge repressive perspectives by inverting archetypes and stereotypes.
The purpose of this presentation is to share part of a curriculum for preservice art educators designed to deepen thinking and promote self-awareness through study of the working process and artwork created by
Maria Gaspar, Joiri Minaya, and Ana Mendieta.
Maria Gaspar, Joiri Minaya, and Ana Mendieta.
Attendees will be encouraged to participate in photographic explorations and reflect on the outcomes.
These artists were chosen because of the common threads that run through their work combining photography, performance, craft, the female body, and landscape to challenge stereotypical perceptions of Indigenous and diasporic peoples, and disrupt patriarchal archetypes.
